Apple iPad and Islamic Education

Apple iPad with Quran

Yesterday, Steve Jobs announced the upcoming release of the new Apple iPad, a much anticipated tablet device that has been rumored around for the past couple of months all over the internet.

Alhough, many are disappointed with the features currently offered in the iPad (or lack thereof), there is still loads of potential in the future upgrades.

We know Apple to be smart with the way they approach the market, so the iPad should certainly not be considered a "fly-by" product. Rather, it is important to look at what the device is capable of offering in the future and how it can transform our lives.

The iPhone has already impressed us with how effective the educational applications are (most of which will also be available for the iPad). Thus, there is no doubt that the new apps for the iPad will be revolutionary, since the tablet will allow you to do much more than any other device currently available. This, as a result, opens doors for Muslims to change the face of Islamic education.

The following are some of the things I would like to see in the Apple iPad:

  1. A web interface that allows you to easily browse through thousands of Islamic videos, lectures, Quran, and other learning resources (on the go).
  2. Once the camera is added, the ability for students to have one-on-one, face-to-face, time with Muslim teachers and scholars for a more effective learning experience.
  3. A library of Islamic books available for download in the iBooks store. No need to carry around huge sets of hadith and tafsir books.

As the devices progress/are upgraded, the opportunities seem endless. Just thinking about the potential that the iPad has gets me very excited for it, as well as other products of its kind (such as the HP Courier and HP Slate, which are truly amazing pieces of technology themselves).

What are your thoughts on the new Apple iPad? Do you think it will have a positive effect on Islamic education? If so, what are some of the things you would like to see implemented?
