Fasting six days during the month of Shawal after Eid al Fitr - Hadith

Fasting Six days of the month of Shawwal

It is highly recommended to fast six days of the month of Shawwal, as this is an act which results in abundant reward. Those who want to fast can fast after `Eid Al-Fitr any six days during Shawwal. It is not required to fast six days continuously without any interruption. One can fast according to convenience any time during the month. Fasting six days of the month of Shawwal and its reward is mentioned in following hadith

Aboo Ayyoob al-Ansaaree narrated: Allaah’s Messenger, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, said: "He who fasts Ramadhaan, and six of Shawwaal, it will be (in terms of rewards) as if the fasted a whole year." [Reported by Muslim, at-Tirmidhee, Aboo Daawood, Ahmad, Ibn Maajah]

Why the fasting of six days of Shawwal after Ramadhaan equates that of the whole year? Some scholars say that the good deed is rewarded ten times. Thus fasting six days is like fasting 60 days, added to 30 days of Ramadhaan times 10 (i.e. 300) it makes it a year.

Also, you should not do the voluntary fast if you have a day or days to make up from Ramadhaan. Rather, you should begin by making up that which you have (outstanding) from Ramadhaan, then do the voluntary fast.
