IFTAAR IN MADINA MUNAWWARA - Masjid Nabawi: Ramadan 2009

Read the Quran - Hadith and useful links

Good Deed: Read the Quran

  • Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), Has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous (96:1-3)
  • ‘Read whatever you can with ease’ (al-Muzzammil 73:20).
  • Aboo Umaamah relates that the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “Read the Qur’an, for verily it will come on the Day of Standing as an intercessor for its companions.” [Muslim]
  • ‘Uthmaan, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “The best of you are the ones who learn the Qur’an and teach it to others” [Al-Bukhari]
  • “Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a reward. And that reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that “Alif, Laam, Meem” is a letter, rather I am saying that “Alif” is a letter, “laam” is a letter and “meem” is a letter.” So increase your recitation of the Qur’an to gain these merits, and to gain the following merit as well. [Tirmidhi]
  • Aa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, relates that the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “Verily the one who recites the Qur’an beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have TWICE that reward.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
  • Abdullaah ibn ‘Amr ibn Al-’Aas heard the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) saying: “It will be said to the companion of the Qur’an: Read and elevate (through the levels of the Paradise) and beautify your voice as you used to do when you were in the dunyaa! For verily, your position in the Paradise will be at the last verse you recite!” [Aboo Daawood and At-Tirmidhi, saheeh]
  • Abd-Allah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas (may Allah be pleased with them both), in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever recites ten aayaat (verses) in qiyaam(layl) will not be recorded as one of the forgetful. Whoever recites a hundred aayaat (verses) in qiyaam will be recorded as one of the devout, and whoever prays a thousand aayaat (verses) in qiyaam will be recorded as one of the muqantareen (those who pile up good deeds).” (Reported by Abu Dawood and Ibn Hibbaan. It is a hasan report. Saheeh al-Targheeb, 635).

Action plan
1. When reading the Quran in Arabic be in a state of wudhu.
2. The Quran is the words of Allah, it should be treated with the utmost respect. Don’t place it on the floor.
3. Read the quran in Arabic for maximum reward, if you don’t understand Arabic make an effort to try and learn Arabic.
4. If you don’t understand Arabic, read the Quran in Arabic first and then in the translation of your mother tongue to get an idea what is being communicated to us from our Lord.
5.Get a mentor. When trying to understand the Quran always try and do it under the supervision of someone that is learned in Quranic sciences. You don’t want to misinterpret the message from Allah.
6. Learn to read the Quran properly with proper pronunciation-tajweed.
7. Start a tafseer circle in your area with a learned scholar to supervise.
8. Reflect and ponder on what the Quran is teaching you and guiding you.
9. The quran was revealed in Ramadan, it doesn’t mean that once Ramadan is over, you can pack the Quran away until the next Ramadan. It is a guide for daily life. Learn the quran and live it. Even if you just read, reflect and practise one ayah a day.
