Youth Tarbiyyah Conference: June 22-24 at the Islamic Foundation of #Toronto for #Muslim Youth

Youth Tarbiyyah Conference

Please mark your calendar for the Annual Youth Tarbiyyah Conference on June 22, 23 and 24, 2012. World renown scholars will be speaking. It is going to be the right opportunity to remind ourselves and refresh our spritual needs.

the 12th annual Youth Tarbiyah Conference – a free admissions event that strives to educate youth amidst the challenges we face in the 21st century, while encouraging them to be vibrant, productive North American citizens, and active, integral members of the mosque community who adopt leadership roles in mainstream society. Our goal is to provide our youth with the tools required to overcome the temptations of society, while remaining steadfast in faith and introducing positive change in the community.

Theme: Rising Above through Strength, Sacrifice and Submission.

This year’s Youth Tarbiyah Conference theme is Rising Above through Strength, Sacrifice and Submission. As Muslims, we often find ourselves engulfed in a series of challenges and conflicts. Yet, despite the setbacks, obstacles and hardships, we must manage to Rise Above by finding strength, by sacrificing, and ultimately by submitting. This year’s conference topics will focus on these three aspects of our lives. What does it take to develop the strength to rise above? How do we foster inner strength and maximize our iman? What sacrifices are we encouraged to make in this life? What are the benefits of these sacrifices? How does one truly submit? This year's conference aims to explore the depths of this theme and bring us to understanding true submission: “Of course, whosoever submits his face to Allah, and is good in deeds, will have his reward with his Lord, and there shall be no fear for such people, nor shall they grieve.”[2:112]

If any of the following below, sounds like you, then you cannot miss this seminar!

-I am a student at university, i sometimes have exams or class during the time of Salah. Its hard to leave my exam to go pray. I need to find a way to be able to do both, get an A in my classes as well as perform my salah on time.

-I am in my forties, I work almost 50-60 hours a week, I barely have anytime to spend on my family let alone attend masjid halaqas, or even prayer such as Jummah prayer.

-I am a teacher, working to support my family. I work as full time, sometimes staying late, and then bringing work home. I also have kids that need taking care of. I have no time during the week to devote to spirituality.

-I am pursuing my career as a Doctor. Getting into med school is tough, I have 6 classes during the week, assignments, tests, exams and I also volunteer at the local hospital. I want to dedicate my life to serving God as well, but I just cant seem to find any time in my schedule to do so.

-We work 9-5 everyday, our young kids go to daycare. By the time we get home, we are both so tired that we usually just order take out from time to time, and rest as much as we can. Our kids usually attend after school programs, or are just glued to the tv, we need them that way in order to get some rest at home from a tiring day from work.

-I am at my business 13-14 hours a day. I pray 5 times, but I dont feel my Salah being as complete or valid as I think it is. I am constantly engaged in thinking about my business instead of my Lord, when I'm in salah. With such a hectic lifestyle, I cannot concentrate on my Salah.

What is Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the month of fasting for Muslims. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam; the others are confession of faith, five daily prayers, Zakah (almsgiving) and Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca).
Fasting may commence on August 10 or 11, 2010 depending on the moon sighting determined by the Hilal Committee of Toronto.

Why Muslims Fast

Fasting in Ramadan is a main pillar of Islam that helps Muslim grow closer to the One God, Allah. According to the Qur’an “Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed to those before you, so that you may learn self-restraint”. Fasting, which is recognized for its health, spiritual and psychological benefits, is considered by Muslims as a means to improve their moral characters and provides an opportunity for a spiritual renewal.

Purpose of Fasting

The real purpose of fasting is not to make us hungry and thirsty, or to deprive us some of our comfort and conveniences but to be conscious of Allah. It is to do one's best to live by His commands and to avoid His prohibitions, fear of Allah, worship of Allah, sincerity in faith, and avoid the disobedience to Allah. Fasting is an invisible act. Only Allah and the person who is fasting know whether he or she is fasting or not. Fasting teaches how to control and discipline our desires. During fasting we learn how to say "no" to things that are otherwise permissible and good, but are forbidden during fasting. When one learns how to say "no" to that which is generally permissible, then one can easily control oneself to avoid that which is forbidden. Through fasting we taste—to some extent—the pain and suffering of those who are poor and destitute. Fasting teaches empathy and sympathy, and it takes away some of our selfishness and self-centeredness.

How Muslims Fast

Muslims fast from early dawn to sunset every day throughout the month (approximately 14 hours a day). The fast requires Muslims to abstain from food, drink, marital relations and ill-conduct during the fast.
Who Fasts

Fasting in Ramadan is compulsory on all physically and mentally healthy and mature Muslims. Those exempted from fasting are the sick, old, pregnant and menstruating women and travellers. Pregnant and menstruating women and travellers make up the missed days by fasting at a later time.

Typical day during the Month

The day of fasting begins with an early morning meal before dawn and ends at sunset. The evening activities include the traditional breaking of the fast usually with dates and water, the sunset prayer followed by dinner (IFTAR). Muslims would then go to the mosque for congregational prayers in which at least one-thirtieth of the Qur’an is recited. The congregation would have listened to the recitation of the complete Qur’an by the end of the month.

End of Ramadhan

Ramadan will depart on September 8 or 9, 2010 depending on the citing of the moon. The celebration marking the end of Ramadan is called Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the major festivals in Islam and will be celebrated September 9 or 10, 2010 depending on the moon sighting.
